What Is ICD-10?
The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) is a globally used diagnostic coding system developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). It provides a standardised language for recording, reporting and analysing health conditions across healthcare systems worldwide. ICD-10 is used for clinical coding, hospital billing, epidemiological research, mortality statistics, and insurance claims.
First adopted in 1994, ICD-10 is currently used in over 100 countries. The WHO released ICD-11 in 2019, but ICD-10 remains the operational standard in most health systems including the NHS. The US uses a modified version called ICD-10-CM for diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS for inpatient procedures.

2nd–3rd characters (numbers) — Specific condition
After decimal — additional detail — Severity, laterality, encounter type
Example: I21.0 = I (circulatory) + 21 (acute MI) + .0 (anterior wall STEMI)

- Use "unspecified" only when no further detail is available
